The Four Spiritual Laws, a Critique, part I

21 05 2007

One of the biggest evangelical “methods” is the use of the Four Spiritual Laws. They were developed by Bill Bright, founder of Campus Crusade for Christ, in the 1950s and have been distributed widely in pamphlet or booklet form. While I have no animousity towards either Dr. Bright or Campus Crusade for Christ (I have a lot of close friends who are involved with this ministry), I see a few troubling things in the Four Spiritual Laws that I feel does not line up Biblically.

There have been lots of critiques on modern evangelism including a lack of discussing our sinfulness in light being afraid of making people feel bad, an unbiblical definition of justification, and a lack of discussing the Christian life and what it means to have Christ as the Lord over your life as well as savior. Some of these creep into the Four Laws, but not nearly as much as in some other methods. They can be just as destructive in some cases. This being said, I know several people who have been called through this presenation of the Gospel and who have matured in their faith.

The Four Spiritual Laws are as follows: 1) God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life, 2) Man is sinful and seperated from God. Therefore, he cannot know and experience God’s love and plan for his life, 3)Jesus Christ is God’s only provision for man’s sin. Through Him you can know and experience God’s love and plan for your life, and 4) We must individually recieve Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord; then we can know and experience God’s love and plan for our lives.

The next four installments of this series will deal with each law individually.
