True God-Enhanced View of Suffering

24 08 2007

I’m ashamed to post this after posting on my health issues. In fact, that was one of the reasons I wept while watching this– that I was instantly convicted of taking for granted the grace of God in everyday life, where I am blessed that I can complain about things as little and inferior as gout and depression. The other reason I wept was for the absolute joy in seeing someone who has suffered tasting the absolute joy of God’s sovereignty and care. Who among us can say the things this man says, with the conviction he says them? Rather, who among us does say the things this man says, with the conviction he says them?

“The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.”
- 1 Corinthian 2.14

The Heidelberg Catechism
Question 1: What is the only comfort in life and death?
Answer: That I with body and soul, both in life and death, am not my own, but belong unto my faithful Savior Jesus Christ, who, with his precious blood, has fully satisfied all my sins, and delivered me from all the power of the devil; and so preserves me that without the will of my heavenly Father, not a hair can fall from my head; yea, that all things must be subservient to my salvation, and therefore, by his Holy Spirit, He also assures me of eternal life, and makes me sincerely willing and ready, henceforth, to live unto him.
