Unnecessary False Dichotomies

11 04 2008

“All too often, modern Protestants have forced people to choose between orthodoxy and ecumenical outreach. Either people choose a group that majors in theological purity, turns in on itself, and yields dry and withered fruit, or they join an ecumenical, socially active Christian organization that is unwilling to bind itself (when the going gets rough) to doctrines not pertaining directly to ecumenical work or justice. Evangelicals have often forced this kind of decision usually erring on the side of doctrinal purity. But at our best, we have offered theological fidelity and ecumenical outreach simultaneously. This kind of comprehensive witness is essential to the fulfillment of Jesus’ high priestly prayer with theological integrity (John 17).”
-Sweeney, Douglas A., The American Evangelical Story: A History of the Movement, pg. 184.

As I’ve stated before, damn all false-antitheses to hell.
