Knowing the Original Languages - A Blog Tour

20 04 2008

A couple good, interesting posts have been flying around blogs on the original languages of the Bible lately.
In the first post, Eric, of Archaic Christianity, asks “should you learn Greek or Hebrew?” - He asks some good, practical questions that Christians would do well to reflect on. Note: the answer isn’t necessarily going to be “yes!”

Doug, of MetaCatholic, wrote a short piece on Eric posts in a “quick round-up of posts.” - Though brief, his thoughts are also nuances on what “knowing” a language means.

Eric responds with another great post based on Doug’s, titled “do you know Greek or Hebrew?” - Where Eric agrees with Doug on “knowing” a language, and gives us a nice dose of humility.

Finally, not wanting to be left out, Mike at Ev Epheso, links to the same posts that I just did, and then throws his two cents into the discussion. - Mike has a great discussion on why some people know the languages of the Bible potentially more so than their native language, which they are fluent in. [See what I did there?] And [uh-oh!] what it means to know a language in terms of fluency and to know a language in terms of linguistic description.
